The advantages to owners of an open-shop approach to construction projects are considerable, including: a higher level of safety, lower costs, better quality work and more control. Open-shop general contractors that employ both union and non-union subcontractors offer access to 100% of the construction marketplace. By contrast, firms that are signatory to labor unions are restricted to using union-only subcontractors, which account for less than 20% of the construction labor force nationwide (22% in Massachusetts). The open-shop philosophy is clearly the wise, fair and equitable approach.
